A brief guide to Bahamas
Map of international airports in or near Bahamas
The Bahamas cover over 100,000 square miles and include 700 islands. The world’s 3rd largest barrier reef is located here and contains almost fifteen percent of all the earth’s coral. Each island is diverse but no matter where you go in the Bahamas you will find wonderful hospitality and friendly people.
Nassau, the capital, is located on New Providence Island, one of the Bahamas fourteen major islands. Paradise Island, the most popular destination in the Bahamas, is connected by a bridge to New Providence. Tourists come from all over the world to stay at Atlantis, Paradise Island’s mega-resort. This all inclusive resort includes an aquarium and dolphin school. No matter what water sport you favor you will find it here. From scuba diving below the sea to parasailing over the sea, Atlantis has it. A large casino is also on the resort grounds.
Other large and popular islands include Grand Bahamas and the Exumas. Lush resorts are located on all of the Bahamas’ large islands and on many of the smaller ones. There are too many choices to list but quite a few of the islands have very unique names. Crooked Island, Rum Cay, and Rugged Island are as matchless as their names.
Conch, (pronounced conk, with a hard “k”) is the national dish of the Bahamas. A mollusk, you will find conch served everywhere both cooked, (usually deep fried), and raw. Conch Salad with raw conch and lemon juice is delectable. Peas and rice is another popular dish and can be found in most places.
You should have no problem getting around in the Bahamas. If you are at least 21 and have a valid driver’s license you can rent a car or a scooter. Many hotels and tour companies provide transfers around the islands and taxis are readily available. When hailing a taxi look for the Bahamas host decal. This decal assures you that the driver has been through training offered by the government and is knowledgeable and professional.
Many people enjoy the duty free shopping that the large islands offer. You will find great buys on electronics, perfume, china, liquor, and linens. Jewelry stores dot the streets and local jewelers make beautiful pieces at good prices.
A fun time to visit is during the festival of Junkanoo. A wild and crazy time is had by everyone as parades flow down island streets. Participants make their own costumes out of brightly colored paper and tear them off as they rush down the streets. Junkanoo is held annually on Boxing Day, December 26, and New Year’s Day.
Major airports are located on the three largest island, New Providence, Grand Bahamas, and The Exumas. As of January 2007 all visitors entering the island must have a valid passport. All major carriers service all three airports, along with the national airline, Bahamasair. As soon as your plane lands and you leave the airport you will find yourself on Bahamian time so relax, enjoy, and have a fabulous holiday.
